First time trying Ethiopian food

When i think of Ethiopian food the only thing i think of is their bread injenera and eating with your hands.

Last year (i think!) An Ethiopian restaurant opened in the city i live in and i heard there was a vegan option available. So when my steo dad was in town and asked if i wanted to go out and eat dinner with him i thought it was a good time to gjve it a try! Also because i was tired of going to the same place to eat each time!

There was one vegan option to choose which was made for 2 people. You get injenera bread and 6 different mixes/sauces which you eat with the bread!


Note, sex = six in swedish hahah!

so… what did i think? It was surprisingly good and even filling! The bread was light and almost fluffy and all the mixes has different flavours. There was 2 lentil mixes, one potato mix, one chickpea mix and one rather spicy tomato mix and then some beetroots and salad. It all worked super well together. However there were so many different flavours at once it was hard to tell them apart!

One negative was that it was so much oil that it left grease around your mouth and hard to get off your hands. Not to mention if you are like me and cant digest alot of fat…. well the stomach cramps kick in after 10 minutes as well as heartburn. Meaning its not such a good idea to eat if you have plans after because all i want to so is curl into a ball from the cramps hahah. I personally thought it was too much oil wguch almost took away the flavours. But maybe thats just me haha.

If didn’t take so many photos as i was hungry and it was so dark meaning you needed flash hahah .

    How do you know you can’t digest fat?


    1. I can digest/absorb fat to a certain extent, but i have cystic fibrosis which affects my fat digestion i.e it isn’t always absorbed especially when it comes to oily foods. I am ok with nuts and nut butters and avocado to a certain extent, but too much oil gives me the worst stomach cramp and pain 😦

    wasn’t it weird that it was dark?I mean I personally like seeing what I’m eating:D jokes aside, it would be nice to try Ethiopian dishes just for a change, but I doubt it would become a fave if it is so oily… but I never know until I try:)


    1. Hahaha, it was rather dark but i could still sort of see the food. But i agree, i much prefer eating when it is bright and i see the food i am eating. One of the reasons i love sitting by the window and with bright light when eating out hahah – not to mention much better photos!
      I am sure not all ethiopian food is oily, but as this was the only vegan option that was all i could have….. i might do some online research and see what other traditional ethiopian food there is and maybe try recreate it at home!

    I see what you mean about the oil – even the salads look as though they are coated with it. I`m sure though that you could recreate something like this at home, using different breads and veggie mixes – I should imagine its quite nice and a bit different!
    I have been to Indian restaurants in the past where the food was in my opinion too oily – they cook with ghee which is very rich. I have never tried Ethiopian food myself but the restaurant you went to looked nice – do you think you would go again? I think its fun trying new foods of different countries – I would love to try carribean food one day!

    oh how I love ethiopian food! Unfortunately I can no longer eat it because I am diabetic. This is IMO the best food from anywhere in the world. I hope you can go back soon. 🐼

    Ethiopian cuisines are amazing. My friends talk about it all the time. I finally got the chance to try with a friend. We went to a restaurant called Taste of Ethiopia. We ordered a giant circular plate for both of us. I ordered fish stew of my main dish and he ordered beef stew for his. But we both each had almost the same other dishes like wat, spinach, steam cabbage. The injera came rolled in a separate basket. They were so soft they kind of tasted like crepes. It tasted so good having with the wat and fish stew.

    What I liked the most was the idea of sharing and eating with your hands. I am from India and I am used to the idea of eating my food with my hands. I only use utensils at school and any other public places. The lentils stews looked similar to what we have in India, it’s called dal. But it’s so tasted so different from that. I had a great time experiencing Ethiopian cuisine. Since I was with my friend, it was more fun. We ate and talked, bonding over the food. We ended the meal with Ethiopian spiced tea.     You have to try the Doro Wot! That’s always my go-to every time I’m at an Ethiopian Restaurant, and how I measure how good a restaurant is. Also, you have not really been to an Ethiopian restaurant if you have not eaten Doro Wot! LOL! Unless you are vegeterian/vegan then you are forgiven. If you are super adventurous, there is a dish called kitfo which is ground beef prepared with clarified butter and spices. It is usually eaten rare-medium rare and if you are adventurous that’s the only way to eat that dish. I like to call it Ethiopian ‘sushi’ but probably more in line with beef tartare. My Mom makes the best kitfo but I’ve tasted a few good kitfo dishes out there.
