The amount of new vegan foods that have been produced and are available is crazy! I mean in just the two years that i have been vegan there have been so many new products, so many new alternatives, so many brands making vegan products and different chain restaurants offering vegan food!! I can’t imagine how amazing it must be for those who have been vegan for 10,20, 30 years and could only ever ave fries or salad when eating out and barely any pre made food available.
Of course there is some debate over this i.e the more processed vegan foods available the less whole foods vegans will eat and that may affect the health. Because the truth is, the plantbased – healthy – diet is because you consume so many fruits, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds and whole foods. However veganism isn’t a diet and is a lifestyle and based on ethical beliefs, so just because you are vegan doesn’t mean you want to just eat salad and potatoes…. many vegans want fast food, they want pre made food and processed food. I.e veganism has nothing to do with health and just because you are vegan doesn’t mean you are healthy or eat healthy.
As mentioned many times before, balance is best. I think pre made and processed food is great for convenience and time, not to mentioned that they are often fortified and a good source of protein for vegans. It is also a good way to get meat eaters to try vegan food as it resembles meat and might be easier to transition with fake meat substitutes. I don’t see a problem with fake meat or substitutes as long as you also eat whole grains, fruit, vegetables and try to keep a balanced diet! Also, i personally believe ethically that it is better to eat processed fake meat than real meat which is a dead animal…. though that’s just my ethical beliefs. From a health perspective it can be discussed.
Anyway… after that long introduction, i decided to try Anammas new vegan mince meat which is supposed to be a lot more similar to actual mince meat. I.e that you can make burgers or balls out fo them and form the mince.
The previous vegan mince they had (and are still selling) is more grainy and works well as taco meat or other dishes that require a mince, however it didn’t work so well when trying to make burgers or balls out of it. It wasn’t my favourite to eat either as it was either grainy or too mushy.
However this new recipe and vegan mince meat both tastes better according to me and works so well when forming into burgers!
You have to first defrost the mince c.a 30-60 minutes (note, try to spread out the mince so that it isn’t too clumpy and doesn’t defrost at the same time).
Also season the mince or adding onion, garlic, salt, vegan cheese, salt etc The actual mince tastes good, but it tastes even better when you add your own seasonings and extras!
And then it is just to form into whatever shape you want and fry (or bake in the oven!)
This is a new hit and favourite of mine. I don’t think i will buy it too often though as i prefer to make bean burgers or home made falafel but it is a great alternative and if i do want soya burgers then this is the product i will buy! Also positive is that it is glutenfree as well!!
