In my collaboration with MAX, i showed what you could do with left over bread or burger buns (i.e home made croutons or even your own breadcrumbs)… and here is a recipe on what to do with left over tortilla bread.
I know you may be thinking…. is there even such a thing as left over bread? Maybe not… or maybe you just have 1 piece left, so why not try one of these recipes. Or maybe you are really craving nachos and guac but you don’t have any chips, but you do have tortilla bread at home.. then you can make your own chips within 10 minutes!
One of the things when making home made tortilla chips, is to watch the chips closely so that they don’t burn. I left mine in c.a 1 minute too long when i got distracted with something else and before i knew it they had gotten a little extra crispy. So best to set a timer and not let the timer run for a minute afterwards, haha.
Recipe:
Tortilla bread (1 tortilla will give you about 6 chips) – It is best to let the bread dry out a little beforehand, however works as well if it is fresh.
Oil
Salt (or other seasonings if you like)
How to:
Heat the oven to c.a 170 degrees celsius.
Begin by slicing the tortilla bread into the sizes you want. Then line baking pans with baking paper. (You may need to bake different batches depending on how many chips you are making).
Place the slices on the baking paper with a little space in between each chip. Then drizzle some oil and salt on top of each chip and rub(coat) the chips so that they all have a little oil and salt to help them get crispy.
Bake for c.a 6-8 minutes depending on your oven. Best to set a timer for 6 minutes (turning the chips over after half way), and then letting them bake for 2-3 more minutes (after the initial 6 minutes) if necessary.
When done, take out of the oven and allow to cool before eating with your favourite dip!!
I have made homemade tortilla chips before but I usually deep fry mine – these sound good oven baked though 🙂

I have never tried deep frying home made nachos, but the baked ones are so good 🙂
